San Francisco Digital Marketing Agency Welcomes Facebook’s New Retargeting, Real-time Bidding Ads into Their Integrated Marketing Campaigns

BeeSeen will be an early adopter of Facebook Exchange, in which relevant display ads target users based on their search and browsing history on other websites.

Facebook is readying the launch of a new service called Facebook Exchange to accelerate their advertising efforts and grow sales.  Facebook Exchange uses real-time bidding and allows advertisers to reach different users sold through third party ad technology partners, or retargeting firms.  The Demand Side Platforms, or DSP’s approved to participate so far are: TellApart Inc., Turn Inc., Triggit, DataXu Inc., MediaMath Inc., AppNexus Inc., The Trade Desk Inc. and AdRoll.com.  Retargeting campaigns are designed to reach individuals who have already been served an ad elsewhere. The new bidding process is also designed to help advertisers deliver more time-sensitive messages. “Facebook’s been having challenges coming up with effective advertising,” said Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst at New York-based EMarketer Inc.  With Facebook Exchange, marketers will be able to target people who have browsed other websites in the past based on cookies that can track activities on the Web. An increasing portion of display ad sales are driven by this type of technology, which sells ads based on user browsing patterns.  Real-time bidding will account for about $5.08 billion, or 27 percent, of the projected $18.9 billion to be spent on U.S. online display ads in 2015, according to researcher IDC.  With real-time bidding, there is no longer the need to reserve prepaid advertising space.  Advertisers bid on each ad impression as it is served and the impression goes to the highest bidder and their ad is served on the page.  This allows Facebook advertisers to show more relevant ads while maximizing efficiency and effectiveness.  The result is highly targeted advertising for consumers.  Facebook Exchange also allows marketers to expand their reach to take advantage of the leverage and scope of Facebook’s 900 million users worldwide.  With Facebook Exchange, advertisers will be able to reach users when they are on Facebook the same way they are able to reach them when they are surfing the internet. Browsing data can also be more of an indication of intent to purchase a product or service than stated interests listed in profiles, “Likes,” or “Shares.”  If the resulting targeted ads prove more relevant to users, Facebook will be able to charge more for their advertising space, which means a dramatic boost in sales.

Can Using Facebook Get You Fired?

Well, the answer isn’t so clear cut. The NLRB backed a worker fired for Facebook posts that ripped on her supervisor. The National Labor Relations Board declared that Facebook posts and comments are legally protected speech in the sense that it’s similar to water cooler conversations between employees.

Even though the National Labor Relations Board has chosen its side, the case remains to be decided by a judge in January or the two parties can still settle out of court. If a ruling happens, the ruling could set precedence but can also be seen as fairly circumstantial. The employee was fired for online comments made on her own time using her own computer.

In a general sense, there could be many other factors to possibly take into account when dealing with whether or not if Facebook posts/comments are under protected status, such as:

  • Privacy settings on Facebook, e.g. who can view the posts, etc…
  • Whether or not if a personal Facebook account constitutes a public forum
  • The subject matter
  • The nature in which the post/comment is made

On a somewhat related note, a Cisco study shows that 2/3 of employees think employers should allow them to access social media during work hours. This study seems to add more questions to the dilemma. When using company time to conduct social media activities, would NLRB’s declaration still apply?

So, what do you think? Should employers allow employees to use social media during work hours? And if so, should an employer be allowed to set social media policies? Or should your personal social networks be protected from employer backlash?

Facebook and FriendFeed: Friendship Request Accepted

Facebook and FriendFeed

As the news just broke earlier this week, Facebook has acquired FriendFeed. It’s relatively big news in the social media industry. It’s still unknown as to how this will change the landscape for Facebook or FriendFeed.

Most everyone knows Facebook, but what is FriendFeed? To sum up, it’s a lifestreaming tool that aggregates data and information from other social networking sites. It also has the ability to search across all of their aggregated data and information, which is something that Facebook definitely can’t do. From an outsiders standpoint, it looks like Facebook is taking a step towards becoming the social networking portal that it wants to be.

Who knows, maybe their next step will be to acquire these guys.

Social Media Tips for Small Business

The landscape for a small business online presence has changed over the years, from a simple informational website to search engine optimization. Now, it’s about social media and this change is a good thing because social media has the potential to drive more customers to a business at less cost. Harnessing this potential is a bit more difficult, so here are some tips to get started:

1. Listen and Observe

First and foremost, in order to succeed in a social media environment, you need to learn how that community operates. Observe how people interact and how you can take part. Learning this initial step can go a long way towards helping your future endeavors.

2. Start a Profile

If you observed correctly, starting a profile in Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, or any other social media platform isn’t just about typing in some company information and expecting the customers to start flowing. In creating a profile, you need to have a face behind it. Social media is about interacting with a human and not some corporate entity. The more directly engaged you can be as a person representing a company, the more successful the interaction.
